An Explanation It seems that some folks have noticed I haven’t been ‘round these parts much lately. The last time I posted any words of substance was way back in November 2008. My frame of mind wasn’t all that great back then and I was feeling pretty lonely. Fed up with dating and scrounging for random hook ups, I resigned myself to the fact that I’d probably be a single bro forever.
At the time I was sorta long-distance text dating a very nice dude who lived in San Francisco but came to SoCal on a regular basis for work. He was awesome and adorable, but ultimately not a love connection. There was also this one guy who seemed really cute and cool, but he lived all the way down in Long Beach and had a kid. Two major character flaws in my mind. He emailed me a few times and tried to set up a date, but I kept blowing him off. Eventually he got busy with the holidays and disappeared for a while.
By the time January 2009 rolled around I was super grumpy about my life and even considered moving back to Indiana. Sometime in that first week of the first month of the year I got a text from the Long Beach dad (not daddy) dude. He was pretty forward and insisted that he was gonna drive up to LA on a Saturday night, take me out for Japanese food and bring me a bunch of free high end beer. It seemed like there wasn’t much to lose and I like to make people happy (i.e. shut them up) so I said yes.
So, I got home from work late one Saturday night and wasn't in the best of moods. Still I’ve got a date with this fella, whose name is Brian, and I had already flaked on him once. He pulled up in his nice car, and I normally don’t care about that sort of thing, but I was kinda surprised by it and thought, “This bro seems classy.” Then I got in the car and scoped my first real life look at him. He was super handsome, but not in a boring way, and I felt instantly comfortable around him. Normally I don’t even feel all the comfortable around guys I get naked with, so I knew something unusual was going on.
We went to dinner at Mishima on 3rd Street and talked through the whole meal. Neither of us wanted to cut the evening short, so he took me to the Gold Coast and fed me Miller Lites until my demeanor could be best described as “tipsy.” After a couple hours it was time to go and I was gonna walk the block and a half home, but he insisted I get in his car. We totally made out for a few minutes and it was outrageously great. Then he drove me home and I told moroccomole that I was hoping to see a lot more of this Brian character.
The next morning we texted each other super early and were all “Do you wanna hang out today?” He said it would be his last kid-free Sunday for a couple weeks so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I rushed down to Long Beach and we spent the day hanging out at his very charming house, walking around a Latin American art museum and eating old people food at the Bake-N-Broil.
After that day-long date I knew for sure it was over with the long-distance SF dude and Brian became my main focus. I’m not sure I would say it was love at first sight, or that I even believe in that sort of thing, but I knew almost immediately that I wanted to start spending as much time as possible with this man.
Things just kept getting better and better. We were spending pretty much all of our free time together and he even let me meet his daughter, which was kind of a big deal, very early on in the relationship. After a few weeks we had decided that we were into doing the whole exclusive thing with each other.
In March we went on our first trip together. Brian and I flew up to SF for my birthday, hung out with lots of my Bay Area friends, and pretty much had a blast. We had passed that major test every gay man worries about with a potential partner…traveling well together. Things went so well, in fact, that he invited me along for the Buenos Aires trip he already had booked for May. Of course I said yes and we had another fantastic voyage together.
Throughout the year we had many adventures together, met each other’s friends, got used to each other’s habits and by the time the holidays snuck up on us we had decided it was probably inevitable that we were gonna end up living together. We were already spending 4-5 nights a week with each other, so full time co-habitation didn’t seem like a big deal. My commute was going to be a bit of a pain, but he was able to refinance his mortgage to make it affordable for us and we need to be close to his daughter who lives in the next town over from Long Beach so it was a no-brainer to move into his place. We set the date for 1/1/10 and I think I might have even fully moved a few days before that.
So, that’s basically what I’ve been up to for the past year or so…meeting, falling in love with and starting a new little family-type situation with this outstanding guy named Brian. There were other things that happened at work and with my friends that were pretty awesome, but I mostly spent all of my non-work 2k9 moments being consumed with this one person and I really don’t regret that at all.
Now that our life together is starting to normalize I’m hoping to get back into some of the things I used to enjoy in the past, like writing, so here I go again...

**update - i have gotten some seriously heavy donations since i first posted this. i'm really taken aback and awed by people's generosity. maybe i just give really good pathetic? anyway, once we get over raising the intial amount we need to walk we can focus on getting funds in a much less stressful way. thanks again, dudes!!!**
